У мене з’явилася нова обсесія – вишитий рушник східного Поділля. Причина: замовлення і отримання надзвичайної книжки “Вишивка східного Поділля” INSPIRATIONS. В ній я прочитала про звичні форми рушників з цього регіону та значення багатьох мотивів. Вони здалися мені якось водночас первісними і футуристичними. Читаючи про них і дивлячись на представлені зображення, я не змогла не відчути, що вишивками цього регіону керувала якась надприродна сила, що це духи тримали голки, які робили стібки, які формували мотиви, з наміром розповісти щось дуже давнє і дуже корінне.

I have a new obsession within my obsession – the embroidered rushnyk of Eastern Podillia. It’s come about since I ordered and received a really remarkable book called “Embroidery of Eastern Podillia” INSPIRATIONS. In it, I read about the classic forms of rushnyky from this region and the meanings of the many motifs. They struck me as somehow simultaneously primordial and futuristic and, as I was reading about them and looking at the images presented, I couldn’t help feeling that the embroideries of this region were directed by some supernatural force, spirits guiding needles, making stitches, forming patterns, intent on telling something very ancient and very fundamental.

Соня Рушник — це моя інтерпретація чи розуміння чи творіння виробу рушника першої половини-до-середини 20-го століття із села Студени, розташованого лише 1,5 км від молдовського кордону. Зараз я вже не пригадую, що мене вперше привернуло до цього рушника з поміж сотень представлених у цій книжці. Можливо, це було моє звичне зацікавлення в тому, як буде виглядати мною виконаний вишитий виріб. Цей рушник вражає своєю веселістю і невинністю.

Я перший раз працювала з такою кольоровою гамою. Особливо, відтінки зеленого, жовтого, синього та фіолетового були для мене зовсім новими у вишиванні, і потребували певних спроб, щоб якомога точніше відповідати відтінкам в оригіналі. Що стосується взору, це я просто його виконала в більш регулярній формі.

Sonia Rushnyk is my interpretation or understanding or creation of a piece from the first half-to-middle of the 20th century, from Studena, a village located a mere 1.5 km from the border with Moldova, in the Vinnyts’ia Oblast‘ of Ukraine. I’m not certain what drew me first to this rushnyk from amongst the hundreds of pieces presented in this book. Perhaps it was the usual curiosity about how a piece would look when re-embroidered as understood by me. It gives an impression of innocence and cheerfulness.

I was working with a colour scheme such as this for the first time. In particular, these shades of green, yellow, blue and purple were entirely new to me in embroidery and needed some trial and error to match as faithfully as possible to those in the photo. As for the form, I simply made it more regular.

Usually, I would take an embroidery out onto the deck to take photos, but it was Melbourne winter at it’s most dedicated when Sonia was newly finished. Here is Resistance Rooster modelling Sonia Rushnyk for you in the warmth of indoors and lamplight.

Sonia Rushnyk is embroidered in 3 strands from DMC six-stranded cotton. Colours:

green 320

grey 844.

The embroidery fabric is pure linen: Zweigart 28 count Cashel in shade 770.

The techniques used are kachalochka, rolling counted satin stitch and lyshtva, backstitch. The ends are finished with petel’nyj shov, a loop stitch.
