There is and there isn’t much of a story behind these two servetky.  The rapid changes of the past month had me in a pretty nervous state several weeks ago.  Perhaps out of that nervousness, or perhaps with an appreciation that there would be oodles of that elusive thing called Time, or perhaps due to a combination of both, I had a riffle through my draws and draws of embroidery fabric, thinking about new projects on which I could embark in the coming months.

Some small pieces of Lugana, which I must have had for decades, needed something light for their proportions.  Back stitch designs are undeniably pretty.  This one came from the sleeve of a woman’s shirt from the Vinnychyna region.  I’m uncertain as to the colours to be used – in this tiny book, it was printed in black and white INSPIRATIONS – so I borrowed the colour ideas from patterns I have in books from Poltavschyna.  If not appropriate, at least I find them pretty.

It was graphed out, as per usual.

The embroidery didn’t take long at all when there are no tickets to buy, no dinners for which to go out, no drinks for which to meet, no gym classes to which to run off!  They are nearly identical, save for the use of either back stitch or cross stitch for the background shapes and border.

On a fabric of this count, I would usually embroider in three strands of the six-stranded DMC cotton.  Howevs, for a back stitch design, I wanted it to be a bit crisper and defined, so for these, I ran with two strands.

Two tiny servetky for two little girls who are staying in in London.

The fabric:  White 25 count Lugana.

The form:  Servetka.

The colours:  DMC stranded embroidery cotton.  Darker blue-green 3768, light blue-green 927, cream 945, salmon 922.  Used in 2 strands.

The design:  From the book “Українське народне мистецтво вишивання і нанизування” (Ukrajinske narodne mystetstvo vyshyvannia i nanyzuvannia), Ukrainian National Art of Embroidery and Beading INSPIRATIONS.

It is the week of Uki Easter and we’ll not be getting together at church nor at home to share and mark this particular holiday.  I hope everyone finds a way to feel something special.  For my part, I simply wish for all of my family, friends, colleagues and community to stay well, sane and connected.
