Спільно ~ Spil’no ~ Together
Rushnyky, ritual cloths, from eastern Podillia have an extremely distinctive style of their own amongst Ukrainian embroidery. Their designs contain images harking back to primordial culture and beliefs, classically using the technique of kachalochka, a rolling satin stitch. These figures, depicted on a wedding rushnyk, have joined hands in a circular dance at an event, which would bring a community together.

Дітям ~ Dityam ~ For the Children
Shtapivka, backstitch, is extremely commonly seen in embroidery, adding detail or outlining a design. Here it takes centre stage. This delicate design design appeared on sorochky, embroidered shirts, of the early 20th century from the region of Chernihivshchyna in north eastern Ukraine. It consists of rhomboids, symbols of fertility and at their centres, the heraldic knot – the family. At each knot is a stylised eight-point star, which offers protection and gives life to all, embroidered in kosa hlad’, a diagonal, counted satin stitch.
